The story

Christmas break, 2019. I decided to digitize the thousands of photos my family had stored in our basement. Scanning services wanted 25 cents per photo—way too expensive for thousands of photos. So I bought an Epson V600 scanner.

The scanner advertised "automatic photo detection"—put 4 photos on the bed, click scan, get 4 separate files. In reality? A preview scan, then individual scans for each photo, taking over a minute for 4 photos. I could scan faster manually.

So I changed my approach: cram as many photos as possible onto the scanner, make one fast scan in 12 seconds, repeat. I'd figure out cropping later. Surely there was a tool that could split these scans into individual photos automatically.

There wasn't. So I built one. I was a CS major with OpenCV experience, and I refused to manually crop a single photo. That winter break project became AutoCropper.
