Most photo scanning software drives your scanner. Fewer of them split a scan holding several prints into separate files. Here is what each one says it does, and the browser step that works after any of them.

Photo scanning software falls into two jobs: it either drives your scanner, or it takes finished scans and separates the photos on them. Most programs people search for do the first, and a few do both. If you scan several prints per pass, the question that matters is what the software does with the page of photos afterward. For the second job on its own, [AutoCropper splits a multi-photo scan in your browser](/crop-scans), whatever program made the scan.

## What "splits multiple photos" means

A flatbed scan of four prints is one image with four photos on it. Software that splits it finds each photo, straightens it, and saves it as its own file. Software that does not split it gives you the whole page and leaves you to crop by hand. Everything below is judged on that, using each vendor's own words from the page I read while writing this.

## The programs, one by one

**ScanSpeeder.** Its site describes it as software to "automatically crop and straighten scanned photos into separate image files" ([scanspeeder.com](https://www.scanspeeder.com/)). It runs on Windows, and needs a flatbed scanner or feeder "with TWAIN or WIA Drivers Installed". There is a Standard and a Pro edition and a free download; the page shows no price.

**VueScan.** Its site says: "Place multiple photos on a flatbed scanner, and VueScan will automatically detect, crop, and separate them" ([hamrick.com](https://www.hamrick.com/)). It lists support for over 8,000 scanners from 42 manufacturers, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It has Standard and Professional versions; the page I read shows no price.

**SilverFast.** The site describes scanner software from LaserSoft Imaging and says it supports "all important models of the major scanner manufacturers" ([silverfast.com](https://www.silverfast.com/)). The feature it highlights for flatbeds is ExpressScan, which "minimizes the number of scan passes". That page does not describe splitting a page of photos into files, so I will not claim it does. No price is shown there.

**Epson ScanSmart.** Epson's scanner software, covered in my [Epson V600 walkthrough](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-epson-v600) and [fast scanning guide](/articles/fast-photo-scanning-guide). It is made for Epson scanners, and Epson's own guidance on multi-photo scans, quoted in [the scan-multiple-photos article](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-at-once), asks you to keep photos at least 20 mm apart.

**Photomyne.** A phone app rather than scanner software: you photograph prints and it crops them. It is a subscription, and I compared it in detail in [the Photomyne alternative article](/articles/photomyne-alternative).

## Comparison

| | Drives your scanner | Splits a multi-photo scan | Platform | Price on the page I read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ScanSpeeder | Yes (TWAIN or WIA) | Yes, per its site | Windows | Not shown |
| VueScan | Yes | Yes, per its site | Windows, macOS, Linux | Not shown |
| SilverFast | Yes | Not stated on its homepage | Not stated on its homepage | Not shown |
| Epson ScanSmart | Epson scanners only | Per Epson's guide, with 20 mm gaps | Not checked | Not checked |
| Photomyne | No, phone camera | Yes | Phone | Subscription |
| AutoCropper | No | Yes | Any browser | Free for 5 images a day |

## Where AutoCropper fits

AutoCropper does not drive a scanner. You scan with whatever you already use, drop the scans into the browser, and it finds every photo, straightens it, and exports one file per photo. It is the split step after any scanner software on this list, including ones that do not split at all, and it works the same on a Mac, a Chromebook or a Windows PC. Full-resolution files stay on your device; only a compressed copy is used for detection.

Two practical points. A wrong box is a drag to fix, not a rescan. And the free plan covers 5 images a day, where a scan with several photos on it counts as one image, so a first batch costs nothing; [Pro is {{price.personal.month}} a month](/pricing) if you have a shoebox to clear.

## Which should you pick

- **You want one program that scans and splits, on Windows:** ScanSpeeder or VueScan, per what their sites say. Try the free download before paying.
- **You are on a Mac or Linux:** VueScan lists both; otherwise your scanner's own software plus a browser splitter.
- **You already have scanner software you like:** keep it, scan several prints per pass, and split in the browser. My [scanning tips](/scanning-tips) cover the settings that matter.
- **No scanner at all:** a phone app such as Photomyne beats no capture, with the quality limits described in [that comparison](/articles/photomyne-alternative).

## FAQ

### What is the best photo scanning software for old photos?

It depends on whether you want to control the scanner or only the result. VueScan and ScanSpeeder control the scanner and say they split multi-photo scans; a browser tool like AutoCropper handles only the split, after any scan.

### Can photo scanning software split several photos scanned together?

Some can. ScanSpeeder and VueScan both say so on their sites. Where the software does not, a separate splitter does that step.

### Is there free photo scanning software that splits scans?

ScanSpeeder's site offers a free download; check its page for what the free version includes. AutoCropper is free for up to 5 images a day with no install.

How Photoshop Elements and a GIMP script divide scanned photos, what each needs from your scan, and the free browser way to do it with no install.

To divide scanned photos without Photoshop Elements, drop the scan into a browser tool that finds each photo, straightens it and saves it as its own file. [AutoCropper](/crop-scans) does this free for up to 5 images a day, with nothing to install. If you already own Elements, or you are happy to set up a GIMP script, those work too. Below is what each route needs from your scan, so you can pick the one that fits.

## What Photoshop Elements does

Elements has a command called Divide Scanned Photos. You scan several photos on the glass as one image, open that image in the editor, run the command, and Elements separates and straightens the individual photos for you. [One guide](https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/photoshop-elements-13/9781491948132/ch03.html) describes it as the fix for crooked scans, and says how accurate the division is depends on the quality of the scan, the spacing between each image and sometimes the content.

Two practical catches:

- **It only runs in the full editor.** A [forum thread on scanning multiple photos](https://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/threads/scanning-multiple-photos.30688/) says the command is on the Image menu and is grayed out in Guided Edit. A [2024 Adobe community thread](https://community.adobe.com/questions-716/divide-scanned-photos-in-ps-elements-2024-1209485) puts it under Edit and gets the answer to make sure you are in Advanced mode.
- **You need to own Elements.** If you only have a handful of scans to split, buying and installing an editor for one command is a lot.

## What a GIMP script does

I did not find a built-in GIMP command for this. The route people use is a community script, [DivideScannedImages by Francois Malan](https://github.com/FrancoisMalan/DivideScannedImages). Its page says it splits separate sub-images from a composite image that has a uniform background and creates a new image from each. After you install it, it appears as Divide Scanned Images under Filters, with a batch version under Filters, Batch Tools.

The script's page lists what your scan has to satisfy:

- The photos should not overlap or touch each other. If they do, the automatic script will not divide them from each other.
- The page background should be uniform, white or black are good, with enough contrast against the photos.
- The page should be evenly lit.

It also says the script is cross-platform, but its optional deskew step is only compiled for Windows. So straightening the pieces is the part that depends on your system.

## The free online way

The same job in a browser takes four steps:

1. Open [AutoCropper](/crop-scans) and drop in your scan. JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PDF and HEIC files all work.
2. Wait a few seconds. Each photo gets its own box, numbered in reading order, and crooked photos are straightened.
3. Look over the boxes. Drag one to move it, pull a handle to resize it, or draw a missed photo by hand.
4. Export. Every photo leaves as its own file inside one zip.

Nothing to install and no editor to buy. Your full-size scan is not uploaded: detection uses a compressed copy and the cropping runs on your own machine. The free tier is 5 images a day, and one scan with four photos on it counts as one image. Bigger batches need a paid plan, listed on the [pricing page](/pricing).

## Which one should you use?

| | Photoshop Elements | GIMP script | AutoCropper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Paid editor | Free, plus GIMP | Free for 5 images a day |
| Install | Yes | GIMP plus a script file | None |
| Photos touching | Spacing affects accuracy | Will not be divided | Draw the missed box by hand |
| Fix a wrong split | Redo the command | Redo the script | Drag or resize the box |

If you own Elements and your scans are well spaced, use it. If you live in GIMP and like scripts, the script is a fair choice. If you want to skip the setup, or a few photos touched on the glass, the browser tool lets you correct a box by hand instead of rescanning.

## Get a cleaner divide whichever you use

- **Leave a finger-width gap** between prints, and keep them off the lid edges.
- **Keep the background plain and evenly lit.** Both the GIMP script's page and Elements' own guidance point to clean spacing and contrast.
- **Wipe the glass.** Dust specks end up in every piece.
- **Scan at 300 dpi** for sharing and screens, or 600 dpi if you want to archive or reprint. More on that in my [scanning tips](/scanning-tips).

My [guide to scanning multiple photos at once](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-at-once) covers placement and what scanner makers' own software does.

## Questions

**How do I divide scanned photos without Photoshop Elements?**
Scan the photos together as one image, drop it into [AutoCropper](/crop-scans), check the boxes and export. Each photo comes out as its own file.

**Can GIMP separate scanned photos?**
Through a community script, [DivideScannedImages](https://github.com/FrancoisMalan/DivideScannedImages), which needs the photos to be apart from each other on a uniform, evenly lit background.

**Why is Divide Scanned Photos grayed out in Elements?**
Forum answers say it is because you are in Guided Edit. Switch to Full Edit (called Advanced mode in the 2024 thread) and it becomes available.

**Is it free?**
AutoCropper handles 5 images a day free, and a scan with several photos on it is one image.

Divide Scanned Photos Without Photoshop Elements: The Free Online Way

Scan a 9-up sheet of trading cards on a flatbed, let your browser split every card into its own file, and export them all at the same 5:7 size for listings.

To crop trading cards from a scan, lay up to nine cards on a flatbed scanner, scan the sheet once, then drop the scan into [AutoCropper](/crop-scans). It finds every card, straightens the crooked ones, and exports each as its own image, so nine cards cost you one scan instead of nine. Below is the setup I would use for a listing batch, from the glass to the export settings. AutoCropper is free for up to 5 images a day, so a first test sheet costs nothing.

## Why scan cards nine at a time

Scanning one card at a time means nine lid lifts, nine previews and nine saved files per sheet. A 3 by 3 layout turns that into one pass. The work that used to be repetitive, cutting each card out of the scan, is the part software does well: cards are high-contrast rectangles on a plain background.

The other half of the saving comes on the second sheet. If you lay your cards out the same way every time, you can save the crop layout once as a [crop template](/batch-crop-images) and stamp it onto every later sheet instead of reviewing detection again.

## Set up the scanner

1. **Use a clean glass.** Dust shows up as specks on every card. Wipe the glass and let it dry before the first sheet.
2. **Lay the cards face down in a 3 by 3 grid.** Leave a small gap between cards, about the width of a finger, so no two touch. Cards that touch can be read as one shape.
3. **Keep the cards square to the glass, roughly.** They do not need to be perfect. AutoCropper straightens a crooked card, but a card lying close to straight needs less correction.
4. **Sleeves and glare.** A card in a penny sleeve scans fine on most flatbeds, but a glossy top loader can add reflections. If a sleeve causes a glare band, scan that card bare or in a thin sleeve.
5. **Pick a resolution.** For listing photos, 300 DPI is plenty for most screens. For a scan you want to keep as an archive of the card, go higher: 600 DPI. My [scanning tips page](/scanning-tips) covers how to choose a resolution without waiting minutes for each pass.
6. **Scan the fronts, then the backs as their own sheets.** Treat the backs as a second batch. Keep the same grid layout so both sheets split into the same order.

## Split the sheet into separate cards

1. Open [AutoCropper](/crop-scans) and drop in your sheets. JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PDF and HEIC files all work.
2. Wait for detection. Each card gets its own crop box, numbered in reading order, left to right and top to bottom.
3. Look over the boxes. Drag a box to move it, pull a handle to resize it, or draw a missed card by hand.
4. If you will scan more sheets in the same layout, save the arrangement as a template and apply it to the next scans. The [batch cropping page](/batch-crop-images) explains how templates work.

Everything happens in your browser. Your full-size scan is never uploaded: detection uses a compressed copy and the cropping runs on your own machine.

## Export every card at the same size

A card scan gives you tight crops, and tight crops are not the same size. A slightly crooked card, a card with a thicker border and a sleeve edge all come out with different dimensions. Listing photos look better when they match, and this is what the export dialog's **Pad to aspect ratio** option does.

- **Natural** exports each card as it was cropped. Use it when you want the exact pixels of each card for grading prep or a catalog.
- **Pad to aspect ratio** places each card on a canvas of the ratio you choose. The list has a **5:7 (Trading card)** preset, which matches a standard card shape, and you can add a custom ratio if you list another size. Padding only adds space around the card. It never cuts into it.
- **Background.** Fill the padding with a color, or choose a transparent background. A transparent background needs PNG, since JPEG has no transparency. If you export JPEG with a transparent fill, the padding is flattened to white.

The export dialog remembers the settings you used last, so the second sheet of a listing session is one click.

## Name and deliver the files

Cards leave as one zip, named with the export time, so a batch is easy to find in your Downloads folder. Inside, each file is named after its scan plus its position on the sheet, for example `sheet-front_3.jpeg`, so card 3 on the front sheet is easy to match to card 3 on the back sheet. If you would rather have your own pattern, custom naming uses a template with the scan name and the card number.

## Do I need a paid plan to sell cards?

Free is 5 images a day. One sheet of nine cards is one image, so a free account handles five sheets a day, which is 45 cards. Bigger batches need Pro, and the Pro plans are on the [pricing page](/pricing). One thing to check before you pick a plan: Personal is licensed for personal and family projects, and Commercial covers client work, resale and business use. If you sell cards, the Commercial plan is the one whose terms match.

## Common problems

- **Two cards detected as one.** They were touching on the glass. Rescan with a wider gap, or delete the merged box and draw the two cards by hand.
- **A card is missed.** Draw its box by hand. Cards with very light borders on a white lid can be hard to detect.
- **Glare on a sleeved card.** Rescan that card without the sleeve, or angle the sleeve away from the light source by turning the card a quarter turn.
- **Cards come out different sizes.** Switch the export from Natural to Pad to aspect ratio and choose 5:7.

## Questions

**How do I scan multiple trading cards at once?**
Place up to nine cards on a flatbed in a grid with small gaps, scan the sheet once, and split it with [AutoCropper](/crop-scans). Each card is exported as its own file.

**How do I crop trading cards from a scan for free?**
AutoCropper's free tier covers 5 images a day, and one image can hold a whole sheet of cards, so a few sheets a day cost nothing.

**What aspect ratio is a trading card?**
The export dialog's Trading card preset is 5:7. A standard card is 2.5 by 3.5 inches, which is the same shape.

**Can I use my phone instead of a scanner?**
Yes. A flat, evenly lit photo of a sheet works, but a flatbed gives even light and no perspective skew. See [how I scan multiple photos at once](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-at-once) for the same idea applied to prints.

Crop Trading Cards From a Scan: 9 Per Sheet, Split Free

How to Crop Trading Cards From a Scan (9 Per Sheet, Every Card at 5:7)

Receipts, letters, certificates, paperwork: scan a bedful at a time and let your browser split every document into its own straightened, full-quality file. Free for 5 images a day, PDFs included.

If you've scanned several documents in one pass (or you have a PDF where each page holds two or three receipts), you don't need to crop them apart by hand. Drag the scans into [AutoCropper](/crop-scans) and it detects every document on the page, crops each one, straightens the crooked ones, and exports them as individual full-quality files. It runs in your browser on any computer, it's free for up to 5 images a day (PDFs up to 5 pages), and your full-resolution scans never leave your device, which matters when the paper in question is financial.

## Paperwork piles up in batches, so scan it in batches

The one-document-per-scan workflow is how a twenty-minute job becomes an afternoon. Almost everything paper arrives in stacks:

- **Receipts** for an expense report or tax season: six or eight fit on the scanner glass at once.
- **Letters and cards** worth keeping: two or three per pass.
- **Certificates, old records, warranties**: the folder you've been meaning to digitize for years.
- **Recipe cards and index cards**: a dozen passes instead of a hundred.

Lay as many on the bed as fit with a little space between them, scan the whole thing, repeat. The splitting is the part software should do, and it's the same detection that [splits multiple photos per scan](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-epson-v600): documents are just rectangles with worse handwriting.

## How to batch crop scanned documents

1. **Scan a bedful at a time.** Leave a finger's width between items and don't let them overlap. Any flatbed or all-in-one printer works; my [scanning tips](/scanning-tips) cover the settings, and 300 DPI is plenty for paperwork.
2. **Upload to [AutoCropper](/crop-scans).** JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, or a multi-page PDF: a PDF is unpacked page by page and every document on every page gets detected.
3. **Review the detections.** Each document gets a crop box; tilted ones are measured and straightened automatically. Paper is harder than photos here, and it's worth being honest about why: a white receipt on a white scanner background has faint edges, so once in a while a detection needs you. Drag its corners to fix it, or draw a box by hand. The review step exists precisely because no detector is perfect on white-on-white.
4. **Export.** Every document saves as its own file at full scan resolution, auto-named after the source (*taxes2025_1.jpeg*, *taxes2025_2.jpeg* and so on). For receipts, it's worth opening a crop's editor and setting its **date** field: the date is written into the file's metadata, so your receipts sort by when they happened instead of when you scanned them.

## This is the opposite job from a phone scanner app

Phone scanner apps (Adobe Scan, CamScanner, Office Lens and friends) solve a different problem: capture one page at a time with the camera, perspective-correct it, and often OCR it into a searchable PDF. Great for a contract you're signing today. But when there's a stack, page-at-a-time capture *is* the bottleneck, and a flatbed pass with automatic splitting runs through a shoebox of receipts while the app is still asking you to hold steady. If you need text extraction afterward, run the split files through your OCR tool of choice: one clean, straightened document per image is exactly what OCR engines like, much more than a five-receipt collage.

## Ways to split a stack of scanned documents, compared

| Route | Cost | How it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Crop by hand (Preview, Paint, Photos) | Free | A minute or so per document, every document, forever |
| Photoshop's Crop and Straighten | Subscription | Batch-capable, but struggles with faint edges and gives you no review step |
| Phone scanner app | Free to subscription | One page per shot, OCR built in, phone-camera capture |
| AutoCropper | Free for 5 images/day; [unlimited from {{price.personal.year_per_month}}/mo](/pricing) | Whole bedfuls or PDFs at once, detection plus a review step, full-resolution export, no install |

## What it doesn't do

Two honest limits. AutoCropper does not OCR: you get perfectly cropped images, not searchable text, so pair it with an OCR tool if you need that. And it can't restore what the paper lost: a thermal receipt that faded to gray scans as a faded receipt. Crop the stack the day the drawer gets emptied, not five years later.

## Is it safe for financial documents?

Fair question for receipts and records. Your full-resolution scan is never uploaded: it stays in your browser, and what's sent to the detection server is a heavily compressed, metadata-stripped copy (around 5% of the file size) used only to locate the document boundaries. The actual cropping happens on your machine. You can [inspect exactly what's sent, request by request](/privacy). I documented it with my own scans.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can it split a PDF of scanned documents into separate files?

Yes. Upload the PDF and every page is unpacked; each document found on each page becomes its own image file. The free tier takes PDFs up to 5 pages; paid removes the cap.

### Does it OCR the documents?

No. The output is clean individual images, which happen to be the best possible input for whatever OCR tool you already use: one document per image, straightened, no neighbors.

### How many documents fit in one scan?

Whatever fits with a small gap between items and no overlaps: typically six to eight receipts, or two or three letter-size pages' worth of smaller items, per pass on a letter-size flatbed.

### What if a detection misses a faint receipt?

Fix it in the review step: drag the box's corners, or draw a new crop by hand. White paper on a white background is the hardest case for any detector, which is why exports always go through a review screen instead of straight to disk.

### What comes out the other end?

JPEG or PNG files at the original scan's full resolution, auto-named after the source scan, with optional per-document title, description, and date written into the metadata. Ordinary files in a folder you own: drop them into your expense tool, tax folder, or family archive.

Batch Crop Scanned Documents Online, Free (Auto-Detect)

Batch Crop Scanned Documents: Split Every Page Automatically

Photomyne's scanning suite costs $59.99 a year, and the camera can only capture what glare and perspective let it see. Here's the no-subscription way: scan prints on a flatbed and let your browser split, straighten, and export every photo at full quality.

Photomyne is the fastest way to get *okay* digital copies of your prints: point your phone at them and the app crops each one out. The tradeoffs are a $59.99/year auto-renewing subscription (after a 3-day trial) and phone-camera quality. If you have access to any flatbed scanner, you can get genuinely archival scans for free: lay several prints per pass, then let [AutoCropper split, straighten, and export each photo in your browser](/crop-scans) at the scan's full resolution. Free for up to 5 images a day, no app to install, and your full-size scans never leave your device.

## What Photomyne actually is

Photomyne is a suite of phone apps: Photo Scan for prints, SlideScan and FilmBox for slides and negatives, and Colorize for restoring old photos. The pitch is real: you photograph a page of prints with your phone, the app finds and crops each photo, and you can work through an album on the couch without any hardware. Their site says "scan dozens of photos into digital albums in minutes," and for casual capture that's honest.

The business model is a subscription. Photomyne's own pricing page puts it plainly: "Try 3 days free then $59.99/year," auto-renewing until canceled, which unlocks the full scanning suite. The apps are free to download, but reviewers note that full-quality saving is limited or locked without the subscription and that sustained scanning sits behind the paywall. There's no one-time purchase option.

## The subscription math

Here's the thing about digitizing family photos: it's a project, not a lifestyle. You do the shoebox over a few weekends, and then you're done. A subscription prices it like something you'll do forever.

Photomyne costs $59.99 every year it stays on auto-renew. The flatbed route costs whatever your scanner costs (often $0, because you or someone in your family already owns one) plus the splitting step, which is where I come in: AutoCropper is free for up to 5 images a day at full quality, and [Pro is {{price.personal.month}} a month, or {{price.personal.year_per_month}} a month billed annually](/pricing), cancel anytime. A typical one-or-two-month scanning push lands somewhere between free and a month or two of Pro, and nothing renews for a year behind your back. Cancel when the shoebox is empty.

## Phone camera vs your flatbed

Quality is the deeper reason to skip the app, and it's physics, not marketing. A flatbed reads a 4 by 6 inch print at 600 DPI: roughly 8.6 megapixels of evenly lit, glare-free, perfectly flat detail. That's a faithful copy of the print, good enough to reprint from.

A phone photo of that same print is a picture *of* a picture. It fights ceiling-light glare on glossy paper, perspective skew, curl and shadow at the edges, and focus falloff in the corners. The app corrects what it can, but correction isn't information: detail lost to glare is gone. For photos you're planning to keep forever, capture them once, properly, and never do it again.

The nice part is that the tedious half of flatbed scanning is gone now. You don't scan one photo at a time: lay a bedful of prints, scan the whole thing, and split the batch afterward. I wrote up [exactly how I do this on an Epson V600](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-epson-v600), and [the same approach works on any scanner](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-at-once), including all-in-one printers.

## Photomyne vs AutoCropper, honestly

| | Photomyne | AutoCropper |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $59.99/year after a 3-day trial, auto-renews; no one-time option | Free for 5 images/day, every feature; Pro {{price.personal.month}}/mo, or {{price.personal.year_per_month}}/mo billed annually, cancel anytime |
| Capture | Phone camera (picture of a picture) | Your scanner, at its full optical quality; phone photos of pages work too |
| Full-quality exports on the free tier | Limited or locked without the subscription | Yes, always full resolution |
| Works on a computer | View-only library; capture is phone-only | Entirely in the browser, on the same desktop your scanner plugs into |
| Install / account | App install; account for backup and syncing | No install; no account needed to try it |
| Slides and negatives | Yes, via SlideScan and FilmBox (in the subscription) | Only if your scanner has film capability (e.g. V600-class flatbeds) |
| Colorize / restore | Yes, built in | No |
| Where your photos end up | The app's albums and their cloud (export to your devices) | Plain image files on your own disk, named and organized |
| Full-resolution photos uploaded | Yes, to their cloud service | Never. Detection uses a compressed copy; cropping happens in your browser. |

## How to digitize a shoebox without a subscription

1. **Find a flatbed.** Any scanner works, including the all-in-one printer gathering dust in a closet. Set it to 600 DPI for prints (300 DPI if you're in a hurry; my [scanning tips page](/scanning-tips) covers the settings that matter).
2. **Scan a bedful at a time.** Three or four prints per pass with a small gap between them. Album pages can go straight on the glass if the album lies flat.
3. **Split the batch in your browser.** Drag the scans into [AutoCropper](/crop-scans); it detects every photo, straightens the crooked ones, and exports each as its own full-quality file, auto-named so the batch stays organized.

Your photos come out as ordinary JPEGs in a folder you own. Import them into Google Photos, Apple Photos, a genealogy site, or nothing at all: no app decides where your family's memories live.

## When Photomyne is the better choice

An honest list, because the app genuinely fits some situations:

- **You have no scanner and won't get one.** A phone capture beats no capture, and Photomyne is one of the better phone-capture apps.
- **Slides and negatives, no film scanner.** Their SlideScan and FilmBox apps digitize film with nothing but the phone. The results are casual-grade, but the hardware alternative costs real money.
- **You want colorization and restoration built in.** AutoCropper splits and straightens; it doesn't restore.
- **Quick sharing beats archiving.** If the goal is getting a few photos into the family group chat this afternoon, the app is the shortest path.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Photomyne actually free?

The download is. Sustained use isn't: their own pricing page says "Try 3 days free then $59.99/year," auto-renewing, and reviewers note that full-quality saving is limited or locked without the subscription. Budget for the subscription if you go this route.

### Can I use Photomyne on a computer?

Only as a viewer. Capture happens on the phone; the desktop gets a read-only library. If you'd rather work at a real screen (and use the scanner sitting next to it), a browser tool does the whole job on the computer.

### Is a phone scan really worse than a flatbed scan?

For archiving, yes. The flatbed gives you even light, zero glare, no perspective distortion, and true 600 DPI. A phone capture is fine for sharing but bakes glare and skew into the only copy you'll have. Scan once, properly.

### What's the cheapest way to digitize a lot of photos?

Borrow or dust off any flatbed, scan several prints per pass, and split the batches free in your browser (up to 5 images a day, or a month of Pro for {{price.personal.month}} while the project lasts). No subscription that outlives the project, no app, full quality.

### Can AutoCropper handle photos of album pages?

Yes. If a page won't lie on the scanner, photograph it square-on in even light and upload that; the detection finds and crops each photo. You'll get better results from a scan when one is possible.

Fit three or four prints on the glass, scan once, and turn every scan into separate straightened files. What the scanner makers' software does with a page of photos, where it stops, and the browser step that finishes the job.

You can scan multiple photos at once on any flatbed scanner: lay three or four prints on the glass with a little space between them, press scan, and one pass captures all of them. That part is easy. What takes the time is what happens next, because the scanner gives you one image with three or four photos in it, and you want each photo as its own straightened file. Here is how I place and scan the prints, what the Epson, Canon, HP and Brother software will do with a page of photos, and the free browser step that turns any scan, including ones you scanned years ago, into separate files.

## How many photos fit on the glass

A letter or A4 size flatbed, which is what most photo scanners and all-in-one printers have, holds three 4 by 6 inch prints with a gap between them, or four wallet size prints, or one 8 by 10. The Epson V600 I use for most of these guides has an 8.5 by 11.7 inch glass, the same as an A4 sheet.

Leave about half an inch (10 to 20 mm) between prints and keep them a little in from the edges of the glass. Every splitting tool, including the scanner makers' own, finds photos by the gap around them, and two prints that touch come out as one photo. They do not need to be perfectly square to the edges. A bit of tilt is normal when you are laying out hundreds of prints, and the straightening step takes care of it later. Face down, lid closed gently so nothing slides, and you are ready.

## Scanner settings that make the split step easy

Scan at 300 dpi if the photos are for sharing and screens, and at 600 dpi if you want to archive or reprint them. 600 is what I use in [the Epson V600 walkthrough](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-epson-v600). Anything higher only pays off for very small prints.

Let each pass produce one image of the whole glass. If your scanner software offers to crop or separate the photos itself and you want to see how it does, fine, but if you plan to split afterwards, turn that off. It is also what makes a pass quick, since there is no preview scan and no dialog for each photo.

JPEG at the highest quality setting is fine for prints and keeps the files small. Pick TIFF if you want a lossless master. AutoCropper opens TIFFs, and [large ones are fast now](/articles/tiff-uploads-faster).

Save every pass to one folder under the scanner's default numbered names. The photos get their real names at the split step, not here.

## What the scanner makers' software does with several photos

Each of the big scanner brands ships a utility that can find separate photos on the glass and save them as separate files. Each has its rules, and each stops at the scanner.

**Epson.** Epson Scan's photo mode with the thumbnail preview "automatically locates the multiple photos and previews them as thumbnail images", provided you "position each photo at least 20 mm apart from the others" ([Epson's guide](https://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/per248/per248rf/howto_4.htm)). When it cannot find them, Epson's advice is to switch to the normal preview and draw each area by hand. Epson ScanSmart does the same job in batch. When I timed it on my V600, three prints took a minute and a half to scan and separate, and one of the three lost half its sky to the automatic crop.

**Canon.** IJ Scan Utility "can scan two or more photos (small items) placed on the platen at one time and save each image individually" once Original Size is set to Auto scan ([Canon's manual](https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/ScanUtility/W/1.2/EN/SU/su-008.html)). Canon lists what trips it up: photos with whitish backgrounds, items on white paper, and very thin or thick originals. Its fix is to adjust the cropping frames in ScanGear and scan again.

**HP.** The HP Smart app's Multi-Item preset scans two or three items placed on the glass and saves them as separate files ([HP's support article on advanced scanning](https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_6670773-6670822-16)). Three items per pass is the limit.

**Brother.** Brother's Auto Crop handles "a maximum of 16 documents, depending on the size of the documents", placed "at least 10 mm away from each other", rectangular or square only, and not tilted more than 10 degrees at 600 dpi ([Brother's manual](https://support.brother.com/g/s/id/htmldoc/mfc/cv_mfc4340dw/asoce/html/GUID-28A47718-8CBD-428B-8AF9-6F889E6F1F05_1.html)). It can save them as separate files or as one multi-page file.

**Mac.** Apple's Image Capture has a Detect Separate Items option under Auto Selection that works with any scanner the Mac supports. In [our V600 test](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-epson-v600) it split one print into two files and needed a preview pass first.

All of them work the same way: they detect at scan time, on their own scanner, with the lid down. None of them can help with scans you already have, which is where most people end up sooner or later, with a folder of whole-bed scans from a scanning weekend, a DVD from a scanning service, a multi-page PDF from an office copier, or a photo of four prints taken with a phone. And when the detection misses a photo, the fix is a manual selection in a scanner dialog, one photo at a time.

## Get each photo as its own file from any scan

Upload the scans to AutoCropper, which [splits and crops scanned photos automatically](/crop-scans). It takes JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC and multi-page PDF files. It finds every photo on every scan, crops each one to its edges and measures its tilt so it comes out straight. You check the whole batch on one screen: drag a corner if a box needs a nudge, add or delete a crop, or rotate a photo that went on the glass upside down. Then export. Every photo saves as its own file at the full resolution of the scan, named after the scan it came from (scan_1, scan_2 and so on), and you can write captions and dates into each file's metadata if you want them.

It is free for up to 5 images a day with every feature included and no account needed, and Pro plans remove the daily and batch limits. Detection runs on a small copy of each scan, under 750 pixels on its longest side. The full-resolution scan never leaves your browser.

Because the splitting happens after the scan, the scanning itself gets simpler: any scanner, any software, one file per pass, no preview. The checking happens once, for the whole batch, instead of in a dialog after every pass.

## Scanning multiple photos with a phone

No scanner? Lay three or four prints on a plain dark surface in even light, photograph them in one shot from directly above, and upload the picture. AutoCropper treats a phone photo of several prints the same way as a scan, iPhone HEIC files included. The quality will not match a flatbed and glare is the enemy, but for a shoebox that only needs sharing it is the fastest way to start. Our [scanning tips](/scanning-tips) page compares the phone camera route with a flatbed and a scanning service.

## A rhythm for a whole box

Scan in passes, split in batches. While one pass is scanning, lay out the next three prints. Keep going until the box is empty, and do not stop to fix anything. Then upload the whole folder and do the review in one sitting, where a missed photo is a drag of a box rather than a return trip to the scanner. The step by step for this rhythm on an Epson V600 with ScanSmart is in [the fast photo scanning guide](/articles/fast-photo-scanning-guide). If you are still choosing software, [photo scanning software compared](/articles/photo-scanning-software-compared) covers which programs split a multi-photo scan.

## Can you scan multiple photos at once?

Yes. Any flatbed scanner captures whatever is on the glass in one pass, so three or four prints become one image. Whether they come out as separate files depends on the software: the scanner makers' utilities above split at scan time within their limits, and AutoCropper splits any scan afterwards.

## How do I scan multiple photos into separate files?

There are two ways. At scan time, use your scanner's multi-photo mode (Epson's thumbnail preview, Canon's Auto scan, HP's Multi-Item preset, Brother's Auto Crop) and follow its spacing rule. Or scan the whole glass as one image and split afterwards: upload the scans to AutoCropper, check the detected photos, and export. That gives you one straightened file per photo from every scan, including scans you made years ago.

## What is the best app for scanning multiple photos at once?

That depends on where you want the work to happen. At a flatbed, the scanner's own utility is free and already installed, and it does the job when the prints have clear edges and you keep to its spacing rules. If you have scans already, or the utility keeps missing photos, a splitter that works on the files afterwards is the better tool, and a browser-based one means nothing to install on whatever machine you are sitting at.

## How many photos can I scan at once?

As many as fit on the glass with a gap between them: three 4 by 6 prints on a letter or A4 flatbed, four smaller prints, and more on a legal or A3 flatbed. Brother's Auto Crop tops out at 16 items per pass and HP Smart at three. AutoCropper has no limit on the photos in a scan, and its free tier counts scans, not the photos in them, at 5 a day.

How to Scan Multiple Photos at Once (Each as Its Own File)

How to Scan Multiple Photos at Once and Get Each One as Its Own File

Scanner and Lightroom TIFFs used to be the slowest thing you could upload to AutoCropper, and on a busy computer the biggest ones failed. Here is what was slow, what we changed, and the before-and-after numbers.

If you scan to TIFF, this update is for you. Until this week a 45 megapixel TIFF took about 20 seconds to appear in AutoCropper, and on a busy computer the largest ones failed with a "damaged or unsupported" message that was not true. Now the same file is on screen and ready to crop in about 3 seconds, uses hundreds of megabytes less memory, and the false error is gone.

## Who this affects

TIFF is what most flatbed scanners save when you ask for the highest quality, and it is what Lightroom exports when you want a lossless file. A 16-bit TIFF of a full scanner bed at 600 DPI is around 45 megapixels and 270 MB. Those are exactly the files people bring to AutoCropper when they are [digitizing a family archive properly](/articles/fast-photo-scanning-guide), and they were the slowest thing you could upload. Over the last two months, 13 of the 14 longest waits for a first image in AutoCropper were TIFF batches.

JPEG and PNG uploads are not affected by this change. They were already fast, and they still take the same path.

## Why TIFFs were slow

AutoCropper runs entirely in your browser, so every file has to be decoded there before you can see it. For TIFFs we used a general-purpose decoding library. It is thorough, which is its strength: it handles every variant of the format. But it does that by unpacking the whole page into memory, then converting it a second time into the layout the screen needs, then drawing it. For a 45 megapixel 16-bit page that meant close to a gigabyte of temporary memory and 13 seconds of work, and it all ran on the same thread that draws the page, so the tab froze while it happened.

The failure was a separate bug hiding behind the slowness. After decoding, the converted page was turned into a very long text string and read back again, a step that needed a second copy of the whole image. When the browser could not find room for that copy, the conversion failed, and the app reported the file as damaged. It was not. The same file would convert fine a few minutes later.

## What we changed

Three things, over two updates.

**The work moved off the main thread.** TIFF conversion now runs in a background worker, one per file, which is released the moment the page is done. The tab stays responsive while a big file converts, and the memory a page touched is returned immediately instead of lingering.

**Uncompressed TIFFs skip the decoder entirely.** Most scanner and Lightroom TIFFs are stored uncompressed, which means the pixel data in the file is already in the order the screen wants. The converter now recognizes those files and paints them straight from the file bytes, a few hundred rows at a time, with no library and no full-page copy in between. Compressed TIFFs, whether LZW, Deflate or PackBits, are read the same way, a strip at a time, and JPEG-compressed TIFFs are handed strip by strip to the browser's own JPEG decoder, which used to be a file we could not open at all. Only the rare layouts, planar, palette and fax-compressed files, still go through the library, so nothing that opened before stops opening. Every path produces identical pixels, and our tests check that on every build.

**The thumbnail is made while the page is still in hand.** The converter now produces the preview and detection images at the same time as the full page, instead of the app decoding the converted file a second time to make them. That alone was two and a half seconds per file.

## The numbers

Measured on a 45 megapixel, 16-bit, 272 MB Lightroom TIFF, three runs each, in a controlled test environment. Times are from the moment the file is dropped.

| What you wait for | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| File converted | 16 seconds | 3 seconds |
| Thumbnail on screen | 19 seconds | 3 seconds |
| Ready to crop | 20 seconds | 4.5 seconds |
| Peak browser memory | 1,380 MB | 970 MB |
| A batch of 2 TIFFs and 5 JPEGs, fully loaded | 31 to 38 seconds | 6 to 8 seconds |

The test machine is slower than most desktops, so your absolute times should be shorter. The ratios should hold, because the work that was removed is the same work on any machine.

## The one trade-off

AutoCropper keeps a working copy of each converted page for the rest of your session, and your exported crops are cut from it. That copy is now a JPEG at quality 95 rather than a lossless PNG. It converts three times faster and takes a quarter of the memory, and at that setting the difference from the original is not visible. It is the same quality setting HEIC photos and PDF pages have always used in AutoCropper. If your archive workflow needs a byte-for-byte lossless chain from scanner to crop, keep your original TIFFs, which AutoCropper never modifies, and export your crops as PNG.

## What to expect

Drop your TIFFs in the same way as before. The first thumbnail should appear within a few seconds, the page should stay responsive while the rest convert, and a batch that used to be worth walking away from should be ready before you have.

If a very large TIFF still fails to convert, the message now tells you the truth: the browser ran out of room. Closing other tabs or heavy applications and trying that file on its own will usually clear it, and exporting 8-bit rather than 16-bit TIFF from your [scanning software](/articles/scan-multiple-photos-epson-v600) halves the size with no visible loss for prints.

If you scan photos and have not tried [AutoCropper on a TIFF batch](/crop-scans) lately, this is a good week to give it another go. And if something is still slow for you, tell us which scanner or software made the file. That report is what made this update happen.

A 45 megapixel TIFF from Lightroom or a flatbed scanner now opens in AutoCropper in about 3 seconds instead of 20, with far less memory and no more false "damaged file" errors.
